My Voice in Your Head : Homophenes and the Perception of Language

In this five minute silent animation, Artistotle’s On Interpretation is read by the floating mouth, and this lip-sync is then misunderstood by the subtitles using common mistakes found in homophenes (words that sound different but look the same on a persons lips), homynyms (words that share the same spelling and the same pronounciation but have different meanings) and homophones (words that are pronounced the same but have different meanings and spellings).

The animation was created in response to Alex Waterman’s performance The Night Driver held as part of the exhibition Staging the Phenomenal Character.
